Mike and Bob’s excellent Circle Tour Ride

Reading the 2021 Lake Superior Travel Guide brought back fond memories of a motorcycle trip my friend Bob and I took back in 2011 (yes, that long ago – how time flies). We departed Eureka, MO early morning on September 9, riding our motorcycles, me on my trusty FJR1300 and Bob on his trusty ST1300. The evening of the 10th we overnighted in Spooner, WI and the next day we made our way to the Big Lake at Superior, WI to officially start our counterclockwise tour. Our first night found us in Copper Harbor, MI, staying Lakeside at the Bella Vista Motel with an exceptional dinner at the Harbor Haus Restaurant. The following night was in Grand Marais, MI with a stop at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum on Whitefish Point Road the following day. From there we stopped briefly at the Soo Locks and crossed the border at Sault Ste. Marie making our way on up to Wawa for and overnight. You can’t miss the Wawa Goose, but make sure you stop in at Young’s General Store, it’s a must-see. We purchased some incredible summer sausage there and have mail ordered several times since. From Wawa we made our way to Thunder Bay to cross back into the US with an overnight in Grand Marais MN. An incredible dinner at the Dockside Fish Market capped off that day. From there we made our way through Duluth, and of course to the world-famous Aerostich Headquarters, then homeward bound back to Missouri. I’m sure I missed numerous details, but we enjoyed incredible scenery and had an incredible time. I can’t wait until the world rights itself again and the border opens up giving everyone the opportunity to circle the Big Lake. – Mike Bukovic, Eureka, MO
