Four adults, two dogs, two campers, a Jeep and a truck. That was the formula for the most memorable trip we have ever had. Started in Grand Marais, MI driving clockwise with stops everywhere. Three weeks was the ideal time for us and we ended in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. We found that the Lake Superior Travel Guide magazine had perfect suggestions, from where to stay to places to eat. Our favorite campground was a small township camp in Ontonagon, MI as we stayed in a site that literally had Lake Superior for our backyard. The waterfalls, the lighthouses, the grandeur of the Lake all combined in a magical manner. The trip up to Sleeping Giant overlook is difficult (14 km on bedrock) but worth every bump. Also do not miss the National Monument in Grand Portage. Funkiest campground was also in Grand Portage, it was next to the casino. Still had a good view of the Lake. One suggestion we would make is that someone should set up a business of doggie daycare in places with boat tours. We missed both the Apostle Islands and Isle Royale as we had large dogs with us. Take this trip!!
