As a National Park geek, I wanted to take advantage of the National Park sites in and around Lake Superior, with Isle Royale National Park as the main focus. After visiting Keweenaw National Historical Park in Calumet, Michigan, enjoying 2 different boat tours at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and camping in Bayfield, Wisconsin, I then headed through Duluth to Grand Portage, Minnesota, by way of Gooseberry Falls State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Tettegopuche State Park and Devil’s Kettle Falls. Grand Portage was where my boat ride launched for Isle Royale National Park. Once there, I spent 3 nights on the island, hiking approximately 30 miles in the Northeast section of the park. Upon returning to Grand Portage, I visited Grand Portage National Monument and then continued onto Voyageurs National Park, and then crossed into Canada at International Falls, continuing onto Thunder Bay. From Thunder Bay, I visited several of the Canadian parks, including Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park, Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, Aquasabon Falls, News Provincial Park, Pukaskwa National Park, Lake Superior Provincial Park and Pancake Bay Provincial Park. I camped at Natural Edge EcoPark in Nipigon and a local park in Marathon.
