Completing the Tour, Canadian Side

When contemplating where to go for fall color viewing, Lake Superior came to mind. We decided on an excursion to the Canadian side, the only part of the Big Lake we had not seen on previous travels. Using the Lake Superior Travel Guide along with other sources, we planned a seven-day trip for the last week of September. We started from Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and drove counter clockwise through Ontario to Lutsen, MN. Lake views, waterfalls, fall colors, and photography were our focus. From Sault Ste. Marie, we backtracked to Tahquamenon Falls State Park and Whitefish Point and also made a side trip to Mackinac Island. Along the scenic drive past Batchawana and Pancake Bays in Ontario, we began to see fall colors. In the Wawa area, we walked to Silver Falls and The Magpie High Falls and did some sightseeing in Lake Superior Provincial Park. Near Terrace Bay we hiked to Aquasabon Falls and Rainbow Falls. We were surprised by how mountainous this area was and by the layered red rock formations there. In the Nipigon area we hiked to spectacular views of Ouimet Canyon with impressively deep gorges and beautiful fall colors. Before leaving Ontario, we explored Kakabeka Falls near Thunder Bay – another spectacular sight! In addition to the natural wonders, we enjoyed visits to lake-related historic sites: The Shipwreck Museum and lighthouse at Whitefish Point, MI; the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, MI; the Marina Interpretive Center in Red Rock, ON; Old Fort William in Thunder Bay, ON; and Grand Portage National Monument, MN. A highlight of our tour was the gondola ride from Lutsen Mountain over the tree tops which were near peak color. One of our favorite views of the lake was from Shovel Point in Tettegouche State Park. Some restaurants we especially enjoyed were Lockview Restaurant near the Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie, MI; Kinniwabi Pines, a restaurant with cuisine of many nations and friendly family service on highway 11 near Wawa, ON; and the Naniboujou Lodge east of Grand Marais, MN. We are proud to say we have now completed the Circle Tour of Lake Superior, a bucket list adventure!
