Growing up in Wisconsin, we were familiar with much of the Wisconsin and Minnesota portions of the Lake, so we decided to start in the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan and go counter-clockwise and chart new territory. Highlights included Presque Isle State Campground, Lake of the Clouds, Ore Dock Brewery in Marquette, Several Falls in Munising, Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tour, Log Slide Overlook in Grand Marais, Michigan, Lake Superior Brewing Co, Tahquamenon Falls, Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Soo Locks, Mountainous Drive Between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa, Agawa Rock Pictographs, White River — Hometown of Winnie the Pooh, Pebble Beach, Aguasabon Gorge, Blue Points Amethyst Mine, Kakabeka Falls, La Poutine in Thunder Bay (over 30 variations, yum!), Pigeon Falls at the Border, Rock beaches on Minnesota’s North Shore, Houghton Falls Preserve in Washburn, South Shore Brewery and another rock beach before heading back. Visitor Centers were very helpful. At the one in Marathon we learned more about the First Nation culture. Ashland’s Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is like a museum, so many engaging exhibits. All in all, one of best trips!
