Camping around the lake

We started clockwise around the lake at Duluth. Since we like to take our time and not be on a schedule we opted to camp and not make the suggested hotel reservations. Before leaving, we purchased a MN State Parks pass and were able to camp at all the State Parks going up the North Shore of MN. We never had a problem finding a camp spot. Minnesota makes it a bit challenging because they have a 100% online reservation system, so we would just show up. Helpful Park Staff would do it right there for us. A few times we ran into grumpy staff who didn’t want to do it so we used the phone that is at each park to make the reservation. After crossing the border we hoteled it in Thunder Bay to do laundry and buy food. The next few nights we camped at Rainbow Falls Provincial Park. This place was beautiful!! We camped right on the beach. I will tell you that in my opinion there is NO 5-star hotel that can beat this view and the sunset! Another highlight was Lake Superior Provincial Park. The hike to see the pictographs was so cool and camping on the beach again was great! Had I known that all the parks we camped at had hot showers with modern restrooms and most with laundry facilities we probably would not have stayed at the hotel. Back in the USA we stopped at the Soo Locks and watched a laker come up thru the locks. The trees in Michigan were so pretty! We were probably a week too early for full color, but beautiful never the less! Don’t miss the boat tour at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore! Copper Harbor was a cute place too. Tried to catch a boat to Isle Royale from the peninsula but they ended that day. Oh well, just another reason to return to the lake. We also took a tour boat out to the Apostle Islands. Then back to Duluth. We spent 18 days and drove 2122 miles around the lake with a lot of side trips! One of those was down to the Mighty Mac Bridge across and then back up to the lake. We had a great trip! We have been home now 2 weeks and the Lake is calling for real….. I must go back!
