We left Green Bay on Thursday 6/28 and made our way around the southwest side of Lake Superior. This was a great father/daughter trip. We were excited to have approximately 1 1/2 weeks to complete so we were able to stop at any spot that looked interesting. The trip was very beautiful and we were surprised to see many of the prettiest spots were in the northeastern tip of Minnesota. We stayed at many places and would like to point out a few that we would definitely stay at again and would recommend. 1) Grand Portage Lodge, look for online special pricing. This was a great cabin right on the water. Very clean, beautiful cabins, we loved this. 2) Quebec Lodge, this bed and breakfast was definitely a highlight of our trip as we were able to interact with others traveling. My daughter particularly loved the ability to interact with Canadians and learn more about life in Canada. I may not recommend this place for little kids however my daughter was 15 and it was perfect. The rooms are very nice as a lodge and the view is amazing. The real gem there is the housekeeper, Ray, who was fantastic. He personally drove us around the area and showed us many hot spots to fish from shore. My daughter actually caught her first fish! This was an experience that I would highly recommend. 3) Chapleau Lodge – this was a terrific experience during our 3 night stay. John is a great host and did a wonderful job showing us around and educating us on the lake. We stayed in the main hotel section and was fine for us. Rustic, but truly beautiful. Our primary reason was to complete the Superior loop, but we did want to fish for a few days. I will say I am a novice with fishing and therefore did not catch many fish. However, others did so the lake was not the problem! We had a fantastic experience because John and his team put a package together for us that included the room, boat, motor, gas, and bait. The lake is big and beautiful and each morning the gas tank was full and the boat ran great. My daughter and I loved just driving around this beautiful lake and that alone was worth the stay. In addition, the outdoor pool was great also. It is hard to find a fishing lodge that allows people to stay outside of week long blocks. John was able to put together just a 3 night stay that included everything and that was excellent. We would definitely stay there again. 4) Grand Hotel – Mackinac Island. I probably don’t need to say much about this beautiful place that you already don’t know. This was our last night stay of our tour and wow… what a finish. Of course this 24 hour experience was almost the same amount of $$$ as the rest of the trip but it is something my daughter will never forget. This place is off the charts amazing for this area and we will definitely stay there again. A fantastic trip. The border crossings went well and we did not experience any issues while we were there. This trip is beautiful and the roads in Canada are in great condition.
