We started in Grand Marais, Michigan and headed west around the lakeshore. We skipped the Keweenaw Peninsula as we’d done it before and will do it again! Enjoyed a beach picnic and fresh artesian well water in Ashland Wisconsin, and on to Duluth. Minnesota was my favorite stretch of the trip – Glensheen mansion, Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock lighthouse, Grand Marais. The Grand Portage Heritage Center and Fort William in Canada were trading ports, where the staff re-enacted life in the village during the annual Rendezvous. We left Thunder Bay in the evening, without a reservation, and thought we’d be sleeping in the car. Construction season meant motels were full – but the roads were great all around the lake! My suggestion is to have a reservation for one night somewhere between Thunder Bay and Wawa. Several B&Bs in the town of Rossport, Ontario. A nice spot for a beach day is Katherine Cove near Wawa, Ontario. Then on to the Sault, and southward home. We’ll do this trip again, probably in the fall.
