Having grown up in Marquette, MI and living near the lake, I have always wanted to travel around it but never did before moving away. On our latest trip back home we decided now or never and headed west from Marquette to begin our journey. After a few hours visiting MTU in Houghton we headed to Ontonagan and Lake of the Clouds – a must see. From there, we headed into Wisconsin thinking we would rest overnight in Ashland — plan ahead! we did not have reservations and ended up in Duluth. Excellent hotel there – Fitger’s Inn — Highly recommend! Lots of shopping and eating facilities within the hotel complex which at one time was a major brewery. A brewery is still located there. The trip to Thunder Bay is short in mileage but will take a full day — stop at as many overlooks, roadside stops, and falls that you can. Gooseberry Falls is a must. Dip your toes in the north shore and experience how much colder it is than the south shore! Stayed at the BW Norwester in Thunder Bay – Decent – good restaurant with an excellent breakfast. Trip from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie is a full day – much different coast line – road is cut through large rock hills – still great vistas. Stop at the Trading Posts for rest. Since we have done the eastern UP many times in the past, we headed south from the Sault. Great trip with great weather made it even more enjoyable.
