After talking about it for years, my husband, Terry, and I finally decided to do the tour. We started out on Sunday afternoon, June 12, from Duluth, and did the tour clockwise. We ended the tour a week later in Duluth on Sunday, June 19.
We followed Midwest Living Magazine’s suggested day-by-day route. (We weren’t aware of your magazine’s publication on the route until we were in Grand Marais a month later and picked up your magazine.) I made reservations ahead of time for the Prince Arthur Hotel in Thunder Bay, the Willows Inn B&B in Rossport, the Best Northern Motel in Wawa, and the lighthouse on Whitefish Point.
Our favorite part of the tour would have to be the Canadian north shore. We have spent many years enjoying Minnesota’s north shore’s beauty, but now we are calling that the Baby North Shore, because it pales in comparison with what we encountered between Nipigon and Wawa. Spectacular beauty around every curve in the road.
We did a side trip to Mackinac Island, a must for anyone who hasn’t be there before. It had been 20 years for us, and it was good to see that the slow pace of the island hasn’t changed much. We rented bikes and rode around the island – and easy, very pleasant ride.
I would recommend a minimum of 10 days to do the tour.
