Hi, my friend Pat Eichler (from Florida) and I (from Wisconsin) finished the Lake Superior Circle Tour on August 7, 2013. We took my 2002 Chrysler Sebring Convertible to do the tour, and we had a fabulous time – two senior citizens in a sporty car on an adventure!
We loved stopping at the many lake overviews on Hwy. 61 north of Duluth, MN, and the various waterfalls along the way through Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. I did all the driving, and I was also impressed with the Trans-Canada Highway for its numerous passing lanes and the Brockway Mountain highway on the Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor, MI, for its breath-taking overlooks.
We spent one day on Isle Royale at its Windigo landing, and experienced Lake Superior at its best going out to the island – smooth and quiet, but the lake’s unpredictableness with our boat fighting huge waves for the two-hour trip back to shore.
Highlights of the trip included the Amethyst Mine Panorama near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Pebble Beach near Marathon, Ontario, (a good place for photo ops, driftwood and rounded rock hunting), the Sault Ste. Marie boat tour of the locks, Whitefish Point north of Paradise, MI; Munising, MI (shipwreck and Pictured Rocks tours); Copper Harbor (its village stores, its lighthouse, and its Harbor Haus restaurant); and Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains.
The Lake Superior Travel Guide published by Lake Superior Magazine was invaluable! It was accurate and easy to follow. Another great source of information and inspiration was Mike Link and Kate Crowley’s book Going Full Circle. This book isn’t really a tour guide, but it gave us insights to some off-the-beaten-path places and personal perspectives on environmental issues.
We did our 1,558.9-mile tour from July 27-Aug. 7, 2013, and our only regret was that we hadn’t done the tour sooner. Even as I write this, I have to say we do have another regret:
We wish that we had had more time on tour. There were so many places and things we wanted to do, and we just couldn’t fit them all into our 10-day tour. We may just have to plan another circle tour!
