What a beautiful ride! Will do the trip again!
In August 1988, we decided to circle Lake Superior a few months after our wedding. We took our old rusty Cavalier, spent over a week, taking our time, and camping along the lakeshore.
In July 2013, we decided to circle the great lake again, as part of our 25th anniversary tours. This time we did it on motorcycles. In an earlier ride in 2013 (late May, early June), we decided to do an Iron Butt ride to out west to Sedona, AZ (with stops at the Grand Canyon (N & S sides), Zion & Bryce Canyons, Monument Valley, Four Corners and several days in the Colorado mountains. And the IBA even gave us a special recognition certificate for the first ever Silver Anniversary Iron Butt ride.
Lake Superior Circle tour on our motorcycles.
Day 0. A 300-mile evening ride to Sault Ste. Marie to start the tour.
Day 1. We started the Circle Tour at Sault Ste. Marie, MI, departing early in the morning and rode to Thunder Bay, ON, with stops in Wawa, Marathon and Nipigon for fuel, with other roadside stops for photos.
Day 2. We rode through Porcupine Mountains, with photos at Lake of the Clouds too, and stops at our old childhood homes in Michigan (Ironwood & Donken). Fuel stops in Silver City, Ashland, and Ontonagon. Spent the night in Houghton, MI.
Day 3. Rode Keweenaw Peninsula loop to Copper Harbor, then to Munising, MI for an evening boat tour of Pictured Rocks. Fuel stops in L’Anse and Munising. Spent night in Munising.
Day 4. Rode the new Hurricane (CR H58) paved road from Munising to Grand Marais, MI, then to Tahquamenon Falls, up to Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, and then wiggled our way along Superior shores back to Sault Ste. Marie. Fuel in Seney.
Beautiful road trip. It was great to see our old childhood homes in the UP. Weather: cool mornings, lots of fog on the western side of the lake, and typical partly/mostly cloudy Michigan days. Downside: really used to USA fuel (and food) prices as Canada was about doubled.
