Starting on July 2, 2013, my husband and I made the trip around Lake Superior. Starting from Milford, Michigan, we entered Canada at Sault Ste. Marie. We spent the first two nights at Lake Superior Provincial Park, tent camping at the Agawa Bay campground. We loved the quiet, no-radio sites, hiking to the waterfalls on the Sand River and seeing the pictographs at Agawa Rock. From there we drove to Neys Provincial Park, stopping to see the Goose in Wawa. Neys was a nice place to camp, however due to well problems we had to boil our water.
Next we traveled to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, stopping to see the Ouimet Canyon and Rainbow Falls along the way. During our 2-night stay at Sleeping Giant we enjoyed swimming in Marie Louise Lake, however a large storm blew in and we spend the good part of the evening in the tent. When leaving the park we were able to get great photos of a black bear that was tearing apart a log by the side of the road. We also had a moose cross the road ahead of us (the only live moose we saw).
Next stop was Thunder Bay where we did some amethyst shopping, then drove out to Kakabeka Falls and camped. Everything was still very wet, but the falls were fantastic. Next we moved to Cascade Falls State Park in Minnesota. Along the way we stopped to look out at Isle Royale (which I had hiked several decades ago), saw Pigeon River Falls and toured Grand Marais.
The following day we headed to Duluth. We had planned to stop at Split Rock Lighthouse, but the rain made us decide to just keep driving. Duluth is a great town. We stayed at the Fitger’s Inn and Brewhouse. Beautiful Inn and great beer! Saw one ship in the morning going through the bridge, then off to Wisconsin. Here we took the ferry out to Madeline Island to camp again. Wonderful beach and trails, however it must be a great year for wood ticks as we found at least 6 during our stay. Our last stop was Bay Furnace Forest campground in Michigan on July 12th. Having grown up in Michigan and vacationed along the south shore many times, we were ready to head home. We look forward to receiving our sticker and certificate to show off our accomplishment.
