Dear Circle Tour Club: WE DID IT! My girlfriend and I finally did the Lake Superior Circle Tour! On June 12, we left Dayton and returned on June 20.
We started the tour at Sault Ste. Marie, watching 2 freighters in the locks – one going east and one going west. We then crossed the International Bridge and stopped at the Visitor’s Center to exchange money (and to get a brochure to tell us the comparison to MPH & KPH!).
We spent about 2-1/2 days traveling Highway 17. We saw lots of waterfalls, beautiful lake views, the Goose Statue at Wawa, Winnie-the-Pooh at White River, Ouimet Canyon, and BEAUTIFUL rock beaches at Marathon and Schreiber. I could have spent the whole afternoon at Schreiber picking up rocks, but it was difficult carrying them up the ramp to the parking lot. One trip was enough!
The HIGHLIGHT for us along Highway 17: WE SAW 2 MOOSE! They were in 2 different areas but both were grazing along the road. WOW!
We crossed back into Minnesota, stopping at Ryden’s Store for money exchange (then spent it all and more!). It is a great place for souvenirs.
As lighthouse lovers, we started visiting each one them down Highway 61 – Grand Marais, Split Rock, Two Harbors and the 3 on the Ship Canal in Duluth. We stayed at the new Canal Park Lodge – beautiful motel, great view of the lake and walking distance to shops and dining.
A quick trip through Wisconsin (the murals in Ashland were great!) then on to the Upper Peninsula. We stopped at 3 of the 5 falls along the Black River and saw the Copper Peak Ski Jump (too bad it wasn’t open yet). Since we’ve been in the Keweenaw Peninsula before, we stayed on M-28 to Marquette, Munising and Newberry.
Every year we make a stop at Crisp Point Lighthouse. We’ve gotten used to the 18-mile ride off M-123! There’s beautiful scenery, a nice beach, pretty rocks and the lighthouse that has been wonderfully restored, and many additions on the site, by the Crisp Point Lighthouse Society. We stayed in Paradise that night (I love that little town!). We had driven the road from Paradise to Brimley to Sault Ste. Marie on a previous trip, so we went south and headed for home.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the great Lake Superior Travel Guide and Lake Superior, The Ultimate Guide to the Region. The information was great and helped us through the trip!
