We did the Circle Tour from June 10-19, 2013. Some of the highlights and our favorites.
Duluth – Comfort Suites Canal Park. Very nice hotel. Especially like the location. Enjoyed coffee each morning at Caribou Coffee. Duluth Pack is our favorite shop. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Grand Marais – We stayed at Best Western Plus Superior Inn & Suites. Very nice rooms, comfortable and clean. Liked the beds. We visited Lake Superior Trading Post, enjoyed browsing through all the outdoor items. On the way to Grand Marais, we stopped at Temperance River (no bar at the mouth). Great photos. I was disappointed that you had to pay an admission to see the light at Split Rock State Park. Maybe we will see it next time.
Thunder Bay – Thunder Bay was not our favorite stop on the tour. It is a larger city, somewhat industrialized, and that was not what we were looking for on our tour. However, we had a terrific dinner at Prospector Steakhouse. After Thunder Bay, we traveled to Terrace Bay. Along the way our favorite spots were Ouimet Canyon, Rossport and Aguasabon Falls and Gorge. We were in Terrace Bay on Friday night and the German chef was cooking at the Red Dog Inn. What a surprise and what great food. He cooks Friday and Saturday nights.
Wawa area – We stayed at the Parkway Motel, which has been refurbished recently. Clean, nicely remodeled rooms at a reasonable rate. Recommended. Another great dinner at the Best Northern Motel and Restaurant near the Michipicoten River. The next morning we had dense fog when we got up. We waited awhile to start driving, but the fog lingered. Hence we missed some of the beautiful scenery between Wawa and Sault Ste. Marie. We will return for a short trip to see this area another year.
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – We took the Soo Locks Boat Tour. What a great little tour. Got some very nice photos of freighters up close.
Paradise, Michigan, area – Stopped at Point Iroquois Light for some good photos. Then traveled along the lake stopping at several of the very picturesque turnouts. Spent the night at the Magnuson Hotel in Paradise and had lunch at the Brown Fisheries Fish House. Went to Whitefish Point Light and Tahquamenon Falls, both places we had been years before, but well worth a return visit. Since we live in Eagle River, Michigan, the route from Paradise to home has been traveled many times, so we covered the rest of the trip in one day.
We highly recommend the Circle Tour to anyone who is interested. We are very glad that we spent 10 days doing the trip and we enjoyed the North Shore of Minnesota and the trek across beautiful Canada. Maybe we are prejudiced as residents, but my wife and I both feel that you do not need to leave the Keweenaw to see the most beautiful and interesting area on the shores of Lake Superior.
