My spouse and I drove the Big Lake this summer! Our trip started June 30, 2011, leaving from Duluth, going clockwise and returning July 10 in Duluth and back home to Sartell, Minnesota.
We drove our Mazda Miata, packed lightly and had one of the most pleasurable times in our life. What a magnificent area to see. The first day out it rained as we pulled into Grand Marais, Minnesota, and the last day rounding the lake into Superior, Wisconsin, we experienced some rain. Other than that the top was down the entire trip. We promised ourselves we would not pass an ice cream shop nor miniature golf – and we didn’t.
We incorporated part of the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron circle tours into the Lake Superior tour. I put 1,770 miles on our roadster. We added the Big Mac bridge, Mackinac City and Mackinac Island to our itinerary.
We discovered the best burger and shake in North America at a local icon in Sault Ste. Marie – Clyde’s. “To die for.” Oh, some of the best jellies, jams and the huge muffins at the Jampot in Eagle Harbor, Michigan.
It was all good and would love to do it again.
