Completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour on a motorcycle, July 8-16, 2011, counterclockwise, starting in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with overnight stops in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Marathon, Ontario; Thunder Bay, Ontario; Duluth, Minnesota; Copper Harbor, Michigan; Munising, Michigan; and back to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, to complete the Circle. From there traveled south again and crossed the Mackinac Bridge, spending a night in Mackinaw City (with a ferry trip over to Mackinac Island), before returning home to Ann Arbor.
I enjoyed the remoteness, natural beauty and clean scent of the areas both in Ontario and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I was also very touched by seeing the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald at the Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum, as I was just out of college when she was lost. Gordon Lightfoot’s song popped into my head frequently as I traveled along the lakeshore. I would love to spend more time in the Thunder Bay area and probably will head that way again at some point.
