I completed the circle tour of Lake Superior, starting in Duluth, Minnesota, on June 20 and ending in Duluth on June 30, 2011. My route was as follows: Duluth (Esko), Minnesota, to Bayfield, Wisconsin, to Silver City, Michigan, to Baraga, Michigan, to Munising, Michigan, to Paradise, Michigan, to Batchawana Bay, Ontario, to Wawa, Ontario, to Marathon, Ontario, to Nipigon, Ontario, to Grand Portage, Minnesota, to Duluth (Esko).
I rode from Duluth to Paradise unsupported and I met up with my wife, Patty, and our dogs Sadie and Laddie in Paradise. They were my support crew for the rest of the trip. They drove from Duluth so I’m guessing they qualify for a membership in the Circle Tour Club as well.
Favorite experience: Definitely all the people I met along the way. It was amazing how friendly and welcoming pretty much everybody I met was. Then again, who doesn’t like a wet and cold guy on a bike?
Favorite spot: Hands down the climb coming out of Montreal River Harbour. 7% grade for 3 miles was a challenge, but the payout was well worth it. The view looking back from the top was spectacular and, of course, the descent on the other side was almost worth the climb.
