My wife and I recently completed the Circle Tour of Lake Superior. We were part of a motorcycle group, circling the lake in a counterclockwise direction. My wife and I rode our own motorcycle. We began and ended in Superior, Wisconsin, with stops in Houghton and Newberry, Michigan; Wawa and Thunder Bay, Ontario. We completed the tour on June 15, 2011.
We felt completely welcome everywhere around the lake, but my personal favorite was Grand Marais, Minnesota. I think I was unprepared for the remarkable beauty of the lake, especially along the northern shore. The mountainous terrain, the huge lakes and sweeping vistas, and the variety of wildlife, all contributed to a most memorable experience. We saw a moose, numerous deer and many other smaller animals. We took five days to complete the tour overall, and felt that was a good compromise to “get-‘er-done” and still see many of the wonderful attractions and points of interest, such as the falls and lighthouses and other attractions (like Da Yooper Tourist Trap and the Canadian Woodcarver and others).
Personally, I had the best time visiting in Grand Marais, and my favorite sight along our route was Kakabeka Falls, which I thought was truly spectacular. We really enjoyed our time around the lake and may look for an opportunity to visit again and travel in the opposite direction in a year or two.
