My husband and I circumnavigated Lake Superior by car from July 15-27, 2013 – an extraordinary trip. We stayed in motels in Duluth, Thunder Bay, Marathon, Batchawana Bay (2 nights), Sault Ste. Marie, MI (2 nights), Marquette, Copper Harbor (3 nights), and Ironwood. Our invaluable guides were your Lake Superior Travel Guide magazine, Hunt’s Guide to the U.P., Around the Shores of Lake Superior by Margaret Bogue and the 1940 WPA Guide to Michigan.
Among our favorite places (besides all the well-documented ones) were the National Monument at Grand Portage with its Indian village and ranger talks, the new History Museum in Marquette (with a real gift shop featuring local products), the Dancing Crane Coffee House and nearby Mission Hill Cemetery and Overlook on the Bay Mills reservation in Brimley, White River with its Winnie-the-Pooh story, and the Falling Rock Cafe in Munising. The north side of the lake was stunning in its quiet beauty.
We are grateful that someone came up with the concept of Circle Tours. Ten years ago when we visited the U.P., we saw signs indicating the Michigan, Huron, and Superior circle tour routes, and determined to do the Superior tour one day. Several years ago I ordered the Lake Superior place mats, and we’ve looked at those maps every meal since. The trip was rich beyond our expectations. We will show off our sticker with pride.
