Give Yourself At Least a Week

When did you complete the Circle Tour?

Saturday, July 28, 2012-Wednesday, August 1, 2012.

What were your favorite spots and experiences on the Circle Tour?

Camping at Grand Portage, Minnesota. The Port Iroquois Lighthouse. Riding my Harley from Grand Marais to Munising, Michigan.

Which way is the best way to travel the Circle Route – Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

I prefer to go from Duluth to Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie, etc. So Clockwise is my choice.

Which part of the lake offered you the friendliest welcome?

Silver City had a great campground with the Lake Superior lakeshore right across the street.

What surprised you the most during your trip around the lake?

Made the mistake of taking a “low maintenance” road shortcut that wasn’t fit for even a four-wheeler and the washboard gravel was so bad I couldn’t ride my Harley more than 20 mph. My advice is to stay on the pavement and seriously avoid the no maintenance roads, because they aren’t kidding. It was a white knuckle ride and it wasn’t that fun. It also took forever to cross from Canada back into the United States. I didn’t realize it was going to take so long to come back over to the U.S., so that part of the trip was a drag.

What do you recommend as the optimum length for a full Circle Tour Trip?

I would give yourself at least a week. I went through Canada in a day and looking back, wish I would’ve stopped more.

If you had a chance to revisit one area for a week, where would you choose?

I would screw around in the U.P. more. I didn’t have time to get up to Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor this trip and that is truly a beautiful area. I found the most incredible waterfalls at just simple county parks in Michigan. I had no idea there was so much to see.

Where is the best high spot from which to view or photograph Lake Superior?

I think Brockway Mountain outside Copper Harbor is just awesome. It’s at the very tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and you can see Lake Superior from all three sides. Just amazing sunsets and scenery from this area.
