We are writing because we have recently completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour. We took our trip July 2-7, 2011. We started in Minneapolis/St. Paul, headed up to Superior, Wisconsin, and headed east to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, then continued north into Canada and around. Our total round trip amounted to 1,733 miles.
A couple highlights of our trip were when we stayed in Batchawana Bay at the Lake Shore Salzburger Hof resort. After a VERY long day of riding, they were so accommodating. The food was awesome and our little cabin/room was so quaint and peaceful.
We also enjoyed the Aguasabon Falls / Gorge in Terrace Bay. So very breathtaking – brought tears to my eyes.
I would have to say the lowlight of our trip was a road just east of Grand Marais, Michigan. Just after the town of Grand Marais, Michigan, the road turned into extremely bumpy pavement; then turned into a gravel road – which we expected by looking at the map. But what we didn’t expect was that this lasted approximately 20 miles – at least five of which were sand roads. At times the sand was 6 inches deep and I got stuck a few times. I would NOT recommend this road as part of the Circle Tour. We finally hit regular pavement and headed south to Newberry, Michigan.
